About this resource

MiGen, the Michigan LGBTQ+ Elders Network, is dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ older adults across the state, built on the belief that everyone has earned the right to “Age Out Loud.” It serves LGBTQ+ adults aged 45 and older throughout Michigan, addressing the distinct challenges this community faces as it ages — including isolation, discrimination, and the need for affirming, knowledgeable services.

MiGen offers a comprehensive set of programs: housing assistance and support, healthcare support services, social events and community connections, training and educational programs, and advocacy. For LGBTQ+ elders and the people who care for them, this combination is significant. Many LGBTQ+ older adults are more likely to be aging without adult children or traditional family support, and historical experiences of discrimination can make them wary of mainstream aging services. MiGen creates safer, welcoming spaces and connects members to resources that respect who they are, while its training programs help other providers deliver more inclusive care.

This resource matters because affirming support can profoundly affect an LGBTQ+ older adult’s health, safety, and sense of belonging, and caregivers of LGBTQ+ elders benefit from connecting to a network that understands their loved one’s experience. MiGen works statewide, with notable programming in the metro Detroit area, and partners with regional networks. To connect, call 313-241-8994, visit migenconnect.org, sign up for the newsletter, or follow MiGen on social media to find events, trainings, and connection services.
